Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez publicly condemned the shooting death of Renee Nicole Good, describing the incident as a “murder” and calling for prosecution. Good, a 37-year-old Minneapolis resident, was fatally shot by an agent with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Wednesday, Jan. 7, in a case that has prompted widespread public reaction.
The Department of Homeland Security said the shooting occurred after Good allegedly attempted to strike an immigration officer with her vehicle. The incident happened just a few blocks from her home and has drawn strong negative responses from community members and her family.
But also, the incident has been highlighted by Republicans as the inevitable result of Democratic leaders and elected officials calling out ICE agents and their immigration enforcement colleagues for months, chastising them as “nazis” and racists. During the same timeframe, DHS has repeatedly said that attacks on their agents have skyrocketed as high as 1000 percent.
