Mark Harmon’s only request before his final ‘NCIS’ episode was for it not to be dramatic

Mark Harmon, known for playing Leroy Jethro Gibbs on *NCIS*, left the show in October after 423 episodes. His exit surprised fans, as Harmon requested the network not promote it, believing it was “crucial—especially with social media—that any hint of a twist be omitted.”
Born in Burbank, California, on September 2, 1951, Harmon initially pursued football but was inspired to act after spending time with Ricky Nelson’s family. Reflecting on his career shift, Harmon said, “That changed my course.”

Harmon joined *NCIS* in 2003, and the show became a global hit. Despite its success, he stayed grounded, saying, “It’s hard to walk through airports without being surrounded by people who love the show.”

Harmon’s decision to step back was driven by a desire to spend more time with his family, noting, “No job is worth missing life’s important moments.” While his *NCIS* future remains open, showrunner Steven D. Binder said, “Never count Leroy Jethro Gibbs out.”
